Glossary

Aspect Ratio

Relation between width and height of an image (e.g., 16:9). Pixel dimensions that share the same ratio are proportional.

Slow Motion

Difference between shoot FPS and playback FPS. 120→24 fps yields 5× slower (~20% speed); durations scale accordingly.

Timecode (NDF/DF)

Timecode labels frames as hh:mm:ss:ff. This tool uses non-drop (NDF). Broadcast often uses drop-frame at 29.97 to match clock time.

Shutter Angle / Speed

Angle at the film gate (°) maps to shutter speed: 1/x = (360×FPS)/Angle. 180° ≈ natural motion blur; 90° is crisper.

Crop Factor / FOV

Crop factor compares sensor diagonal to reference (default Full Frame 43.27 mm). Equivalent focal = focal × crop factor. FOV = 2·atan(size/(2·focal)).

Anamorphic / Squeeze

Squeeze (e.g., 1.33×, 2×) widens the horizontal view. De-squeeze multiplies width; aspect ratio and FOV change accordingly.

FAQ – Video Calculators for Filmmakers

How to use the aspect ratio calculator for 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 2.39:1?

Enter width or height in pixels and select a preset ratio (16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for TikTok/Instagram Reels, 1:1 for square, 4:5 for Instagram feed, 4:3 legacy, 2.39:1 scope). Click Calculate to get the matching dimension and actual ratio.

How do I compute slow motion speed from 120fps or 240fps to 24/25/30fps?

Set Shoot FPS to 120 or 240 and Playback FPS to 24, 25, or 30. The calculator shows the slowdown factor (e.g., 5× slower) and converts durations, useful for editing and storyboards.

Frames to timecode converter at 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 fps

Enter FPS and either total frames or a timecode in hh:mm:ss:ff. Our non‑drop timecode converter returns the equivalent frames or timecode instantly.

What pixel sizes should I export for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Shorts?

Use 1920×1080 (16:9) for YouTube, 1080×1920 (9:16) for TikTok/Reels/Shorts, 1080×1080 (1:1) for square, and 1080×1350 (4:5) for Instagram portrait. The ratio tool computes any custom size.
