Shutter Angle ↔ Shutter Speed – Quick Guide
Translate shutter angle and shutter speed with the shutter calculator.
Basics
Shutter angle is the film term; shutter speed is the stills term. Both describe how long each frame is exposed.
Classic rule
For natural motion blur, set shutter angle to 180° or shutter speed to roughly 1 divided by twice the FPS. Shorter angles like 90° or 45° give a crisper look.
How to convert
Enter FPS in the calculator. Pick a preset angle or type your own. The tool shows the matching speed and angle so you can flip between the two.
Example
With FPS at 25 and angle at 180°, the calculator outputs 1/50 s. Type 1/100 s instead and you will see 90°.
Tips
- Check shutter settings before high-speed shoots
- Use the calculator to match exposure across mixed camera bodies
- Round the result to the nearest practical shutter speed
